OMA 10th Anniversary Milestones Gain Industry Recognition

This is the first news letter in our 10th anniversary year. During the past decade, OMA has achieved many milestones. As an organization, we should look back on these achievements with pride. To make sure the industry is as excited as we are about our published enabler specifications, over the last several months, OMA has actively engaged with the analyst community, informing and educating them about OMA’s strategic focus areas, ongoing technical work, and published standards specifications. In particular in the areas of Mobile Device Management, Machine-to-Machine Communications, and Application Programming Interfaces, OMA has gained significant industry traction through analyst briefings with Yankee Group, Software Market Insight, Analysys Mason, Gartner and Ovum. OMA has received a very positive response from the analyst community, which should help all our members to be ever more successful in the marketplace. During these many interviews, we have found that there is a lot of interest in proof points of commercial deployment of OMA enablers. For example, the recent press release about OMA’s market share of 1.4 Billion devices using OMA device management specifications has really resonated with the analysts we have spoken with. To make sure OMA continues to have a positive impact across our industry, I am encouraging our members and non-members, to consider sharing deployment information and case studies about commercial roll-outs. Nothing speaks louder than evidence about commercial implementation and deployment of OMA enabler specifications.

Finally, I want to remind you about OMA Demo Day, to be held during the Brooklyn Meeting. The OMA is inviting members who are involved in proof-of-concept trials, pre-commercial demos and early implementations of OMA enablers to showcase their work to the wider OMA community. The OMA Demo Day will be held on Thursday June the 12th. This is your opportunity to watch OMA technology come to life!

Open Mobile Summit

OMA is excited to be a Bronze Sponsor of this year’s Open Mobile Summit in both London 29-30 May and San Francisco 7-9 November. The Open Mobile Summit in London is one of the most influential events in the mobile industry calendar. It connects senior strategic executives from a diverse range of industry segments converging on the mobile Internet opportunity—across mobile, Internet, media and commerce. This is the 4th annual event, with over 430 VIPs expected to attend the London event and more than 750 expected to attend the San Francisco event.

OMA Technical Plenary Chair, Musa Unmehopa participated in a much anticipated panel discussion entitled Taking the Connected Home to Market at the London event. “After OMA’s recent Home Environment Services Workshop in February in Barcelona, I am very pleased to participate in this panel discussion,” said Musa. “OMA’s market share of 1.4 Billion devices using OMA device management specifications will need to be put in the context of the M2M and connected home markets.”

Other panelists included British Gas, Vodafone and Telecom Italia. “The Open Mobile Summit is excited to have the OMA join such a great discussion” says Robin Batt, Managing Director of Open Mobile Media, producers of the summit. “We look forward to an increased presence from OMA at our San Francisco event in November.”

Musa joined a line up of speakers with Keynotes from Dan Schulman, Group President, American Express, and Peter Ayliffe, CEO of Visa Europe and all of Europe’s leading mobile operator groups including Deutsche Telekom, SFR, Orange, Vodafone and Everything Everywhere.

“This is a very powerful conference bringing together service providers, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists, all under the same roof. I highly recommend it” – Daniel Gurrola, VP Group Strategy, Orange / France Telecom

OMA members will be able to register for the San Francisco event using VIP code “OMA” for a £100 saving as soon as registration opens.

OMA Extends Management Functions of OMA DM Specification Suite to New Applications and Services

OMA DM Client-Side API Framework

OMA DM Client Side API Framework defines APIs to enable local applications on any network-connected device to access the Management Objects supported by the OMA DM Client on that device. This greatly simplifies the configuration of applications to communicate with the OMA DM Client. Operators, OEMs and ODMs who deploy the specification will now be able to provide programmable access to the various OMA DM Management Objects in the existing OMA DM enabler suite of specifications. This will enable:

  • Local application registration and deregistration
  • Notification of updates to existing Management Objects
  • Interaction between local applications and OMA DM Client Management Objects
  • Updates to Management Objects by local applications

Coming on the heels of OMA’s recent 1.4 billion DM deployment milestone, industry analysts are now beginning to learn and appreciate the extensibility of OMA’s work in device management to the growing connected device market. As always, OMA specifications, including OMA DM Client-Side API Framework is platform and network agnostic – in this case using WebIDL.

“Always On” Connections and Multiplicity of Networks Available Create New Challenges for Managing Multiple Devices, Services, Operating Systems and Bearer Technologies

Open Connection Management API

OMA’s history in bearer agnostic specification development makes it well placed to manage the various connections that all of our devices now use to access the Internet, mobile networks, personal networks and other interactive channels. Until the release of the OMA Open Connection Manager API, there was not a standardized way to accomplish the transfer among various connections for one device, multiple devices or multiple users.

OMA Open CMAPI allows operators, OEMs and ODMs to develop services on top of generic interfaces in an open and programmable way. Whether developers want to create connection manager applications, new consumer services or simply manage the ubiquitous connection associated with WiFi off loading and other connection management challenges, OMA has standardized and therefore simplified these multiple connection scenarios with its standard API.

OMA Open CMAPI enables a non-fragmented, generic solution to address the challenges of connection management across the mobile Internet. Now, any device requiring access to the mobile Internet can connect using OMA Open CMAPI.
