OMA Technical Plenary Chair

Welcome to the third quarterly newsletter of 2012. In this edition, I would like to draw your attention once more to the domain of Machine-to-Machine communications (M2M), which has been identified by the Board of Directors as a strategic focus area for our organization. Within the Technical Plenary, we have been compiling an inventory and conducting a technical analysis of the many M2M-related activities in OMA (such as Device Management, Gateway Management Object, Open Connection Manager API, Converged Personal Network Services, Device Management Smart Card, and Secure User Plane Location). The objective is to establish a coherent and coordinated view of how the various M2M-related OMA enablers link up internally, as well as how they fit with initiatives from our industry partners.

Speaking of industry partners, OMA is proud to join the newly created oneM2M partnership as the first type-2 partner. This allows OMA to contribute to the mission of oneM2M, which was established in order to cooperate in the production of globally applicable access-independent M2M Service Layer specifications, while at the same time continuing our own OMA technical work program. I am looking forward to a fruitful and effective cooperation.

At our recent member meeting in Bangkok, OMA hosted the Mobile Healthcare Workshop to examine the intersection of smart phones and healthcare information. Experts envision that Machine-to-Machine Communications and Mobile Device Management will play a large role in collecting and managing healthcare information. The relationship between mobile devices and the healthcare industry is a dynamic one in which communications platforms are advancing both consumers’ and providers’ engagement with healthcare information. The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to discuss how mobile standards should play a role in this quickly evolving market. The program included speakers from Continua Healthcare Alliance, DoCoMo Healthcare, KDDI, AT&T, MTI Ltd., A&D Company Ltd., Fujitsu, Intel, and the GSM Association.

Before I close this chairman’s introduction to the newsletter, I would like to look ahead to Los Angeles, which will be the last meeting of this calendar year. We will have our Annual General Meeting and we expect to make significant technical progress towards our 2012 Annual Release Plan. Furthermore, Los Angeles will be my last meeting as Technical Plenary Chairman on behalf of Alcatel-Lucent and I will be handing over the baton. It has been a tremendous privilege and pleasure to work with all of you in support of OMA’s mission. OMA has accomplished a lot over the years, and I am excited to see what the future will bring.

OMA Healthcare Workshop Highlights

The OMA hosted a Mobile Healthcare Workshop as part of its September Technical Plenary in Bangkok, Thailand. Presentations from OMA member companies and key industry players addressed the intersection of smartphones and healthcare information. The workshop goals were to understand the role of standardization in the mobile healthcare field, while identifying the role of the Smartphone from the healthcare system’s perspectives. In addition, the presenters sought to examine the potential of utilizing the Smartphone platform and applications as a tool to open new possibilities and perspectives in the healthcare domain.

The one day Workshop, attended by more than 100 delegates, was moderated by Alan Hameed, Director, Wireless Development Division, Fujitsu. The Workshop included presentations from Continua Healthcare Alliance, DoCoMo Healthcare, KDDI, AT&T, MTI Ltd, A&D Company Ltd, Fujitsu, Intel and GSMA, and closed with a lively open networking discussion hour among presenters and attendees. OMA Chooses a New Tagline

The Open Mobile Alliance has adopted a new tagline to give greater clarity to the meaning of the OMA logo and help quickly identify OMA as a leading organization for defining specifications for global wireless data interoperability. The OMA Strategic Planning Committee along with Eshwar Pittampalli, OMA’s Market Development Director, championed this activity. The tagline was deliberated by the OMA Board of Directors for several weeks prior to the Bangkok meetings and was decided upon in a face-to-face meeting hosted by the Strategic Planning Committee on September 19. The tagline is “For a connected world.” The tagline will always appear in conjunction with the OMA standard logo and will be graphically represented with the following:

If you would like more information regarding the newly integrated tagline and logo, or if you would like to have a copy of the artwork to use in OMA related presentations, please contact Elizabeth Rose.
