LightweightM2M 1.1 Preview

LightweightM2M v1.1

On the heals of the successful launch and rapid market uptake of LightweightM2M 1.0, OMA’s Device Management Working Group (DM WG) is defining updates to OMA LightweightM2M (LwM2M) to be released in version 1.1.  The DM WG invites interested parties to join them to help define the next generation device management standards for the Internet of Things (IoT).

LwM2M v1.1 new features preview:

  • Performance optimizations such as the CBOR encoding format (RFC 7049) and Patch/Fetch (RFC 8132) are being evaluated.
  • Additional security features such as DTLS/TLS profiles for IoT (RFC 7925) and end-to-end security are on the list of desired functionality.
  • Extensions to fully utilize new low power WAN technologies such as NB-IoT and LoRa
    • Objects for management of NB-IoT connectivity have already been defined.
    • Additional objects for LoRa will be added.
    • Support for NB-IoT will be enhanced.
  • New use cases
    • Support for non-LwM2M devices managed by a LwM2M-enabled gateway will be investigated.
    • CoAP over TCP/TLS to enable LwM2M to be used in networks with restrictive firewalls is another possible use case.
